Program Overview

This AIA course features a comprehensive, educational tour of the Koetter Woodworking manufacturing facility in Borden, Indiana. Beginning with the kiln drying and rough mill operation, participants will learn about the importance of proper drying of raw materials used in the manufacture of millwork and doors. The tour will cover, in depth, all aspects of how wood mouldings are manufactured, from drawing to finished product. Participants will see, first hand, how virtually 100% of the wood fiber is used during the production process.

In order to facilitate group transportation to the tour, registration is required by June 7.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the term “sustainable harvesting” and the role that it plays in the wood products industry as it contributes to green building and sustainable design, including the complete utilization of raw materials, from lumber to finished product

  • Understand the features & benefits of properly drying raw lumber, resulting in a more stable, finished product once installed

  • Understand the features and benefits of stile & rail door construction and the various types of wood fire rated doors

  • Understand how effective manufacturing technology can result in improved yield when it comes to the finished product
