Program Overview

Beth Johnson, Executive Director of the Cincinnati Preservation Association (CPA), will be presenting on the topic of historic preservation. The presentation will cover a summary of the Hauck House history, its different uses throughout time to the current occupancy by the CPA’s offices, and an interactive presentation on architectural preservation, utilizing the house for preservation examples.

Learning Objectives

  • History: Learn about the Hauck House history and its role in Cincinnati’s West End, and how the renovation improves the human experience (Health and Welfare) of the CPA’s staff, volunteers, and public users.

  • Preservation 101: Learn about the basics of historic preservation and how renovations are made by complying with the Ohio Existing Building Code as it relates to Health, Safety, and Welfare.

  • The four treatments of preservation: Restoration, Rehabilitation, Preservation, and Reconstruction. Learn how each treatment is different and how each applies to different circumstances.

  • Safety and Accessibility (Welfare): Learn the extents that the Ohio Existing Building Code requires for improved safety and accessibility of renovated Historic buildings, depending on its desired occupancy.

Speakers

Beth Johnson is the Executive Director of the Cincinnati Preservation Association. She was previously the Urban Conservator for the City of Cincinnati serving as the main point of contact and staff reviewer for infill projects with historic districts. Johnson is a leader in historic preservation planning in southwest Ohio and northern Kentucky, with experience in guiding investment in historic buildings to create vibrant neighborhoods in Cincinnati, Covington, and as far as San Antonio and Austin in Texas.
