Program Description

BUILD. LIGHT. PLAY. Lighting Charrette

A fast-Paced Charette will challenge teams to get hands-on with various building materials to craft a structure and experiment with luminaires, playing with form, light , and texture. Two local lighting industry professionals will lead the exercise and discuss local lighting resources.

Introduction and Presentation: 20-30 minutes
Introduction to each company, their role in the lighting industry and expertise.

Build: 20-25 minutes
Participants will build a structure with various provided building materials.

Light: 15-20 minutes
Luminaires of various types will be provided for participants to play with various ways to illuminate their structures, revealing form, texture and shadow.

Play and Network: 15-20 minutes
Play with your results and view what other participants have created!

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss of the role of specialized lighting design for environments that promote safety, security and health.
  • Analyze light’s role in social jet lag, circadian rhythms and well-being.
  • Explore lighting qualities and building materials including absorption, reflection, refraction and transmittance.
  • Investigate the latest LED technologies that promote energy efficiency and sustainability as well as energetic environments.
