Modern Pool House
The grounds of a Carl Strauss designed home is the setting for this new pool house and renovated pool. The owner’s desire was to add garage space in the lower level and create a pool house on the main level that would also be a fun family destination in the off-season with fireplace, bar, and large screen TV while doubling as a guest house with kitchen, laundry, and spa bath. Surprisingly private for an urban site with city and river views, this hillside property presented some zoning hurdles to overcome in order to construct the pool house in the front yard. To satisfy the zoning requirement, the design skillfully connects the pool house to the main house by way of a continuous stainless steel and aluminum trellis structure. The pool house itself is intended to complement, not mimic the Strauss house. It does so with transom glass that “floats” the flat roof, and with materials and a color palette that pay homage to the modernist cedar-clad original. The inside/outside connection is achieved by folding glass doors on two sides, and with pavers that seamlessly serve as pool deck and pool house flooring. Other grounds improvements include a whimsical children’s garden complete with “hobbit hole” playhouse and outdoor instruments. Inside the pool house, clean lines and a white color palette for the kitchen and bar allow the kitchen functions to act more as furniture backdrop in the open plan. The TV and fireplace floating in a concrete surround compose an interior focal point as well as room divider. The spa bath includes a wet room of tub and full body spray showers. This was envisioned by the owner as a place where the kids might have a splash party in their bathing suits on some evenings, and as a parents’ getaway on others.
