AIA 2016 Diversity in Architecture Report
The American Institute of Architects has released its 2016 report on Diversity in the Profession of Architecture. Some interesting findings may reshape the current dialog about the profession’s difficulties in maintaining diversity in its workforce.
It is widely thought that women leave the profession due to family and child raising concerns and that minorities don’t even get into the profession due to low enrollments starting in college.
It turns out that isn’t the largest narrative. It appears from the survey data that the profession is simply not keeping up with other professions in offering promising and lucrative jobs to qualified designers. At the moment, young people simply don’t believe the reward for the demands of the career are worth it, and they seek better opportunities outside of architecture, especially after losing an A/E/C industry job.
