2007 Theme: Thinking GREEN, a sustainable building project

When we hear about the need to reduce our use of fossil fuels, most of us think of oil & gasoline. But did you know that building materials, construction work and the operation of buildings account for more than 60% of fossil fuel use? Architects of the AIA and around the world are working to change that, and at the core of this exciting positive change is sustainable design.

The central theme for 2007 is sustainable design which is often called 'green' design. Sustainable design and construction practices reduce the negative effects and impact of buildings on the environment and their occupants. There are five broad areas of green design including site planning, water efficiency, energy efficiency, conservation, and indoor environmental quality. The overall goal is to conserve our land, air, and water systems, and reduce energy use while providing healthy places for people to work, play and live. 2007 Design Problem:

For the proposed Fort Washington Way 'covers' between Broadway and Race Streets, design places and spaces that connect downtown Cincinnati to the riverfront utilizing sustainable building practices.
