We asked our students, "What is your most sacred space? What makes that place sacred to you?"
Wherever it is for you, every person can recall a place they have been that has provoked an emotional or visceral response. We sometimes describe this feeling with words like 'awe', 'transcendence', 'sublime' and 'holy'. What is it about the quality of these spaces that moves our souls and connects us to something other than ourselves? These are the ideas that this year's Architecture by Children program aimed to creatively explore with the 2004 theme, SACRED SPACES.
The theme 'Sacred Spaces' is intended to include all places, religious and secular, that can fall under the broadest definition of 'sacred'. These include monuments to individuals, ideals, myths, and deities as well as spaces of refuge, retreat, meditation and prayer. While churches, mosques, temples, chapels, etc. are readily recognized as places that are sacred; a sacred space might also be the corner of a bedroom or any place that is very special - large or small, public or private.
The students' responses are
as varied as one could imagine. They were presented with the task of designing
a sacred space for either themselves or a client. The field was intentionally
left wide open... While churches, chapels and grottos abounded, there
were also homes, gardens, tree houses, private islands, forests, memorials,
cemeteries, monuments, clock towers, a gorgeous Buddhist tea-house and
a cow museum and cafe.
AIA Cincinnati would like to thank all of our architects, teachers, and
volunteers for helping to make this year's program an overwhelming success.
The following winning projects were chosen from 180 projects on display
during the week of April 24 through May 1, 2004 at the Downtown branch
of the Public Library of Cincinnati
and Hamilton County. These projects were chosen from the hundreds
of projects created in classrooms at the 36 participating schools. ABC
congratulates these and ALL of the 2,100 students who successfully completed
this year's program.
